New Year's Resolution

Another year goes by, and we reflect on what our resolutions were last year. Now it's time to make new resolutions for 2013. What will be your resolutions for as a writer for this upcoming year?

I have my goals for this year and I hope to achieve half of them. I am wishing all of my writer friends the best with their writing and hope everyone has a happy and safe New Year!

I recently submitted the first ten pages of the first book in my trilogy to a publisher I would love to have publish my book.

I am such a nervous wreck. I have never really submitted anything in a while, but I don't really know the reaction from the publisher but I'm going to cross my fingers.

DEAR CASSIE Excerpt:

We kept walking on the lake trail, the bullfrogs croaking. There was also a humming in my ears from the nicotine.

 It could only be from the nicotine. It had nothing to do with being outside, at night, alone with Ben. It had nothing to do with Ben coming to the cabin and taking me instead of Nez and it definitely had nothing to do with the stars above us shining like they were the sky’s tiara. 

I stopped on the trail and looked up, taking them in, when all of a sudden bright colored lights exploded in the sky—fireworks, one after another, on top of each other, huge kaleidoscopes of light, like sparkling rainbow spiders.

“How did you know?” I asked, my voice going softer, like if I talked too loudly they would stop. It was so beautiful, after weeks of so much ugly. 

Ben turned to look at me, the colored lights in the sky turning his skin pink, blue, green. “I’m magic.” He shrugged.

I geared up to tell him to fuck off, because that was some corny-ass shit, but then I realized that he really kind of was. In that moment he was able to actually make me forget being me.

 “I would try to kiss you,” he said, “but I’m afraid you’d kick me in the balls.”

“I probably would.” I laughed, the sky filling with noisy color like paint launching from a giant popcorn popper. “But like I said, it wouldn’t be about you.”

“I guess I’ll have to figure out how to make it about me,” he said, taking off his boots and socks and standing. “Come on.”

“There is no way I am getting near that water again,” I said.

“I’ll make sure nothing happens to you,” he said, holding his hand out to help me up.

            I looked at his palm, open, waiting, just wanting to hold mine. For once, I didn’t think about anything except that there was a cute, sweet, smart-ass boy standing in front of me with his hand out.

I pulled off my boots and socks and took it.  

We stood at the lakeshore, our hands still clasped, the water licking our feet, fireworks decorating the sky.

I turned to him. He was looking up, his mouth open in wonder like he was trying to swallow the moment.

It was definitely one worth keeping.

“Jenny?”

I groaned and turned my face into the soft cotton I was sleeping against. I inhaled deeply. And my nostrils were filled with the most delicious smell ever: man, soap, shaving gel, sunshine…a wonderful, vaguely familiar, amazingly yummy smell.

I opened my eyes, then sat upright. “Hi.”

Airplane.

Gunner.

Freak fit.

He’s so hot.

The clasp of my charm bracelet hung on his shirt. “Sorry.” I disentangled the chain.
“It’s fine.” He smiled. “We’re getting ready to land.”

“Really?” I asked. “Sorry for using you as my pillow.” I chewed my lip. He was a very, very nice pillow.

His eyes were crazy blue when he looked at me. “I didn’t mind.”

“Oh,” I said, a huge smile rising up. He didn’t mind.

His smile grew. Dimple.

“You’re the nicest guy I’ve ever met.”

“I am? Why do you say that?”

“Because I’ve been…unhinged for most of this trip. I mean, you’re here, you know it’s true. And instead of asking to move or having the Air Marshall restrain me, you hold my hand and talk to me and let me sleep on you.”

“I did ask if I could move, but they said no.”

I stared at him. He started laughing again. I leveled a glare at him then. “Maybe you’re not the nicest guy.”

He cleared his throat. “I don’t think I want to be the nicest guy.”

“Why not?” I didn’t have enough nice people in my life. I missed nice people. “What’s wrong with being nice?”

“Nice guys finish last.” He arched an eyebrow at me. “Or something like that.”

“I like nice guys.”

“Oh, well, that’s good. Then maybe I am a nice guy.” He cleared his throat again. His whole demeanor changed, almost like he was bracing for something. “I thought maybe I could call you later, when we’re in LA. Maybe we could…go out?”

Contain the smile, Jen. Act cool. My heart was thundering as I asked, “After I was all crazy? Really?”

“Really.” He laughed, shrugging. “If you want to.”

I did. So want. Definitely. But now was not the right time. “I’d like to, but…“
“But you have a boyfriend.”

“No, I—”

“You’re not interested?”

Man, his eyes are blue. “It’s not that either…” I mumbled to a stop. He was staring at my mouth.
“
But…?” he prompted.

“Timing.” I sucked in a breath as the airplane began to descend. We were landing and I’d just given him the lamest excuse. “I’m kind of in a bad place right now…”

He was watching me, looking a little confused. “Okay.”

“My career."

He nodded.

I wanted him to know that if things weren’t as messed up as they were for me, I would date him in a heartbeat. I mean, I wanted to date him. I wanted to see that smile and those gorgeous blue eyes again. But I knew I shouldn’t want to, because I had way too much baggage for a guy like this. He deserved better. I tried to explain without dumping too much information on him.

“I’m between jobs right now. Every second of my day has to be about that.” That still sounded like an excuse—a really pathetic excuse.

“It’s fine. Don’t worry about it.”

We landed with a bounce, the wheels screeching on the tarmac. I gripped the arms of the seat until we were cruising down the runway toward the airport. We were in LA. We were…home. This was good. I’d get off the plane alive.
But it was also bad because that meant goodbye to Gunner.

He stared at the back of the seat and I stared at him. He smiled at me once or twice, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that I was losing something good. I fiddled with my charm bracelet.

What am I doing? He’s sweet and funny and gorgeous. And he had no idea who I was…or rather what the world thought I was. With him, I was just Jenny. And yes, I had a lot of…unpleasantness to deal with, but didn’t everyone? So why didn’t I deserve a good thing? I
mean, after everything I’d been through, it was my turn for something good. And Gunner was, I just knew, something good.

“I’d like to go out with you,” I said.

“But…?”

I shook my head. “No buts. I’d really like to see you again.”

He smiled, his eyebrows arching. “Okay.”

“Okay.” I smiled, delightfully aware of the warm tingles that his smile elicited.

Finished NaNoWriMo 2012

Another November down! I feel amazing! After tearing at my hair because my book was at 40,000 words, and I couldn't seem to get the story to finish. I opened back up my book of outlines and it gave a small spark in me for three little plot twists I ended up adding in, and it made the stories final word count come over 90k. It's a sci-fi, so around that range in the wordcount is something good. I am filled with so much relief right now! I shall now put this manuscript to rest, and I will reopen it after Christmas, before I head back to university. In the meantime since this is a trilogy I'm working on, I'm going to see how far I can get into book two in the trilogy before I start preparing the queries about the new trilogy.

NaNoWriMo Update

It's near the middle of NaNoWriMo. I feel so much progress than I did last year. Last year I was getting 1500 words a days and I didn't finish until after Thanksgiving. 

I started this year on November first at the crack of dawn, at exactly 5am with a ten cups of coffee, and wrote 15,300 words in one day! That is a big accomplishment even for me. It was mostly the climax of the story I had been working on, and now I am working backwards. I now find myself at 40,000 words, and the story doesn't feel anywhere near completion. It's a bit in different spots as well. Plus I did not break up the chapters so I just have one really long story. On the plus side I showed yesterday my creative writing professor the first four chapters (even you can even call it that) and he liked the story, he said it just needs major editing required.

I just need to face that I am too wordy for my own good. I hope this will be the trilogy series I had been anticipated on writing. I am also really hoping I can at least finish the main story before Thanksgiving, we all know how hectic Thanksgiving is. If can finish this one before Thanksgiving then I can start to work on book two in the trilogy, and see if everything flows. This is a trilogy I have high hopes for because of the uniqueness I brought to the sub-genre and I hope someone sees it with potential. Once I finish this draft, I will put it to rest until January, and the time to shred it apart into a billion pieces until its perfect before sending it off to my critique partner begins!

This is another one of my favorite vampire series (yes I do like vampires, just not one particular series). This book series was like Gossip Girl which is one of my favorite novels. I liked how it was rich vampires living in Manhattan. The vampires don't live forever, but they do come back in life cycles. This was an interesting take on vampires. The writing was in third person limited, so it's like regular third person but it head hops and gives too much of the backstory in each chapter. The author is better off writing a whole prequel novel of the events before the series. This is an example for someone who wants to write third limited.I am a huge shipper of Schulyer and Jack. Sometimes the writing gets too dull and rushed. I am just upset with having to wait a whole year to read the final book in the series.

The Iron Fey by Julie Kagawa

Have I mentioned how much I love fairies? I love the fairy trend. While some novels read the same thing, or plots similar to Twilight, I decided to read this series, and I am very happy I read all books straight through.

Meghan Chase has a secret destiny; one she could never have imagined. Something has always felt slightly off in Meghan's life, ever since her father disappeared before her eyes when she was six. She has never quite fit in at school or at home. When a dark stranger begins watching her from afar, and her prankster best friend becomes strangely protective of her, Meghan senses that everything she's known is about to change.
But she could never have guessed the truth - that she is the daughter of a mythical faery king and is a pawn in a deadly war. Now Meghan will learn just how far she'll go to save someone she cares about, to stop a mysterious evil no faery creature dare face; and to find love with a young prince who might rather see her dead than let her touch his icy heart.

This was just a glorious book series to read, and the best series about fairies I have ever read! I loved Kagawa's writing, and the conflict with Puck. What I liked is how she put the whole Shakespeare spin into the story uses Shakespeare elements. The world building takes a little while to get into but the writing is what made me not want to put it down. I found Puck to be my favorite of the entire series. My favorite book in the whole series was book one, when Meghan discovers she's a fairy, however the whole teenage girl finding out she's a fairy gets pretty old when rereading it in different books all the time. I loved this series so much, and I heard Kagawa has a spin-off series from Iron Fey coming out this year. I look forward to reading more of her books.

Wings by Aprilynne Pike

This book series is about fairies and I just had to read it. It's been on my reading pile for while, and now I am going to read it.

The book series begins with a girl Laurel who moves to a new town and goes to a new school. Laurel sits in Biology class (another book copying Twilight) and gets tongue tie. Laurel soon discovers in the middle of her sophomore year that she is a fairy sent among humans to protect the gateway to Avalon. This book is about flower fairies, and it didn't even feel like a young adult book it's more like for middle grade genre. 

Most people picked up the book because of quote from Stephenie Meyer on the cover, but imagine my surprise that Pike got her agent through Meyer because they are best friends, and you can read about it on her blog. I get this was a New York Times bestseller, but if you reread over and over of a human girl finding out she's a fairy or the long lost daughter of the king of fairies after a while it really gets old. Another take from Twilight is where you can feel the meadow scene. Pike's books weren't so bad. The first book in the series I wasn't too crazy about. You have to give her some credit for a debut it didn't take me until 300 pages into the novel before the plot started picking up. After you read the first book the story gets better in book two, three, and four, but I think the best book in the series was the final book Destined. I'm giving this series a lukewarm rating. 

The Modern Tales of Faerie by Holly Black

This was an amazing book to read! I love Holly's writing. Filled with so much imagery and descriptions! Book three in the series was just to tie up the loose ends left in book one and two, but it does make some things about fairies a little creepy for me. I enjoyed this series, it keeps you cautious with wanting to turn the pages as quickly as you can wanting to see what happens next! I highly recommend reading this series!

Graceling Realm Series by Kristin Cashore

This is a book series twitter has been fussing about so I decided to read it all straight through.

A thrilling, action-packed fantasy adventure (and steamy romance!) that will resonate deeply with adolescents trying to find their way in the world.

I did read all three books, Okay, Cashore's writing is really good, and the world building is fabulous. I did like the heroine, Katsa, she is so strong and fierce butt kicking warrior, reminds me a bit of Katniss from The Hunger Games but I find her to be just as annoying as Bella from Twilight. Katsa is the only strong heroine in the book, the other female characters are just weak. The beginning of the book just throws you into the action.  There are parts of the book that really bugged me. The author spends the majority of the book trying to sell these to the audience; dresses are the worst, femininity is wrong, men don't respect women, commitment ruins relationships, marriage is a tool of the devil. Katsa and Po, you really can't feel the love between them and the way Katsa treats her love interest is just horrible, like how she hits him then Katsa gives the cliche excuse how she's sorry? Don't abusers always say they are sorry and they won't ever do it again. You can't feel the romance between them, but then you also have the man hating feminist feeling when reading it. Po does change quite a bit in Fire and Bitterblue. This is suppose to be for young adults? This book series is not my genre.  

Matched Trilogy by Ally Condie

But Cassia can't stop thinking about Ky, and as they slowly fall in love, Cassia begins to doubt the Society's infallibility and is faced with an impossible choice: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path that no one else has dared to follow.






I decided to try reading another dystopian series. The Hunger Games was dark but showed an important lesson; the way our governments behave now, what makes you think we won't end up like that in the future, sending kids to fight to the death? I like the dystopian novels because it's not the same in every book, authors come up with such unique interesting plots. I prefer to wait to read a book series when the entire series is out.

This is not one of my favorite dystopian series mostly because it's pretty boring. Condie is a good writer but this story was so bland it took me ages to read.Condie's agent is also the agent of Meyer and Pike but this series did not have a good sales record compared to other dystopians. The government system decides who is paired with who. There was too much of the romance elements in this, and not enough of the dystopian of what it's like living in this government system. I felt like some elements in Matched were trying too hard to match up with the Hunger Games.

The Host by Stephenie Meyer

I read The Host when it first came out. When Meyer was still growing as an author for her Twilight series. 

Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. Our world has been invaded by an unseen enemy. Humans become hosts for these invaders, their minds taken over while their bodies remain intact and continue their lives apparently unchanged. Most of humanity has succumbed. When Melanie, one of the few remaining "wild" humans, is captured, she is certain it is her end. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, was warned about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the glut of senses, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. Wanderer probes Melanie's thoughts, hoping to discover the whereabouts of the remaining human resistance. Instead, Melanie fills Wanderer's mind with visions of the man Melanie loves - Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer begins to yearn for a man she has been tasked with exposing. When outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off on a dangerous and uncertain search for the man they both love.

The book has a good plot. But it's the writing. Certain parts in the book tend to get bland. The book needed more editing, and the book was so incredibly long while reading it it felt like the story was just dragging on just to get the book to the 800 pages, and during those particular lagging pages, there were so many places that were bland, you find yourself skimming the book most of the time. Meyer's books the main characters lack personality. The fact that Meyer has a degree in English amazes me by how horrible her storytelling is. I heard this book is going to be a trilogy, so who knows how the next book will turn out.

Another wonderful blog tour for Inkspell Publishing! I have never really been much of a Sci-Fi person but I read the summary of this and I was immediately intrigued I wanted to purchase the book almost instantly.

Interview with Author

When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I'd always made up stories to go along with the music I played in orchestra and then later on in my flute lessons with my students. I'd written one book in high school, but I'd always wanted to be a concert flutist. Then, my flute students started telling me my stories were so good I had to write them down. I tried my luck at a YA epic fantasy called The Voices of Ire and had limited success. But, I loved writing, so I just kept turning out more books, getting better with each one and here I am today! 

What inspired you to begin writing?

Music and some of my favorite movies have inspired me the most. I grew up watching the original Star Wars movies over and over again and reenacting scenes in my backyard. I alos loved The Goonies, Star Trek The Next generation, Labyrinth-David Bowie rocks as the Goblin King, and The Last Unicorn-why she chose to go back to being a unicorn I can only guess. 

How do you get your ideas for writing?

They come to me while I'm doing boring stuff, like walking the dog, commuting to work, folding laundry, in the shower, doing dishes. Wow, I do a lot of boring stuff, huh? 

What made you come up for the idea of Colonization?

I had just finished writing Paradise 21, the first book in my New Dawn series, published by Entangled Publishing. I wanted to know more about what happened to the people on the ship when they reached the planet. But, when I started to write, it came out through a teen's perspective, so it couldn't possibly be book 2 in my adult series. So, I created a YA spin off that will be its own series. The Paradise Reclaimed series was born!

Are the character's based on people you know?

All of the characters are bits and pieces of me. Even the bad ones! As for people I know, I try to stay away from that in fear of getting sued. LOL

Will there be more books after Colonization?

Yes, there are two more books in the Paradise Reclaimed trilogy: Reconnaissance and Alliance. Recon. is told through Nova William's POV and Alliance is told through Lyra Bryan's POV. 

Any future projects you'll have being released?

Yes, I'm just finishing up a contemporary romance called My Maestro in which a flutist in an orchestra falls in love with the conductor. I submitted it to Entangled Publishing's Bliss line, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. 

Do you have an advice to aspiring writers?

Keep writing! I've gotten better with every book I've written. It took me four books to get an agent, so what would have happened if I quit after three?? Keep at it and write everyday. It's like practicing an instrument!

Being an avid fan of fantasy books, this book quenched my thirst for wanting to read something new and unique! I loved the writing. I loved Greta a very strong heroine which we need in today's YA literature. The book reminded me of a darker version of Alice in Wonderland! I love the adventure along with all the twists written across the pages. Very wonderful book and I hope there will be more books in the series.

Character for NaNoWriMo Project

I'm one of those writers where I need a visual of my characters before I begin working on my new writing project for NaNoWriMo, so these are the people I pick that resemble my characters the most. ( I DO NOT OWN THESE IMAGES)

NaNoWriMo is About to Rumble

The time to finally write the novel you have been itching to write is about to happen. I for one am excited to be doing NaNo this year. I like being an English major, and my creative writing instructor has given us an assignment to participate in NaNoWriMo then to print out our draft and turn it into the professor. Now granted the draft will be absolutely horrible, but I will at least have the story typed up, then I can spend three months tearing it apart into pieces until it's perfect.

This is a project I have been wanting to write for quite some time. It may sell to publishers, it may not, but this is something I truly think is very different, and if I have to self publish it then so be it. It's a story I want to put out there and I want it written on paper. I normally write contemporary or urban fantasy so writing a Science-Fiction novel book series is going to be a challenge. I shall update you guys on my progress with the book and hopefully post a snippet once editing is in the works.

7 Things Characters Do Too Much Of

Helpful writing tip I discovered. I was reading the blog of many authors and discovered the blog of Young Adult author Tahereh Mafi on what we read and see too many characters doing in book. So I decided to post what we see characters doing too much of.

Reading this makes me want to crack out the thesaurus. 

The Selection by Kiera Cass

Dystopia is a very good genre to read. Every book in this sub-genre is different, you're not reading the same plots over and over again. 

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon. But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks. 

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself--and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.




I enjoyed this book. The writing felt like I was reading a book for middle school kids, too juvenile, but the story idea was intriguing. The book reminded me like I was watching the bachelor and re-reading The Hunger Games. Then the book ended on a very unnecessary cliffhanger as to prove a point that the book is a series. Hopefully the next book in the trilogy The Elite the plot gets better.

Preparing & Surviving Through NaNoWriMo

Every writer knows what it means when the month of November us just around the corner; the time to write the novel you have been wanting to write for ages, but never having the time to write it! Now is the time to write the story you have been itching to write for such a long time.

Are you a first time writer? Nervous about to do NaNoWriMo for the first time? I know exactly how you feel. When you sit down to write your first novel, it's terrifying. So I've put together a post to help you prepare and get through the month.

1. Have your characters ready
Keep in mind who your characters are. Their physical appearance and their personality. If you have a hard time trying to visualize what they are suppose to look like, use pictures of actors who you would pick for the role in your book if it was made into a film. Once you have your characters and feel their emotions, it's much easier to write them.

2. Write a small synopsis or Outline of the book
Some of my writer friends will write a detailed synopsis about the main plot first which would be around 30,000-40,000 word, then the authors would work their way backwards writing the events leading up to the main plot twist. I find myself sometimes writing the main plot first then working backwards in the story. Do what you think will work for you. 

3. Write, Write, oh and Write
If you have not picked up Stephen King's books for writers, it's highly recommended that you buy copies and read them. King's advice is when writing the first draft, don't look back. That's the key to NaNoWriMo folks, once you begin writing that manuscript, keep writing, don't go back and edit, don't stop until it's complete. Even if you feel like every word you are writing is absolute crap, that's okay, that's what months of editing are for. Spend the entire month of November writing that book until it's complete. There are writers who have to go back and edit as they go complete a chapter, but that takes up too much time and you will soon see yourself already at the end of November before you have even finished your manuscript. You spend so much time perfecting those three opening paragraphs  you will never get to finish the story. Your best bet as a writer is to finish writing the whole manuscript, then that way you can at least say to yourself, "There, I finished my first novel." 

4. Set a word limit.
Most writers I know will set themselves a word limit they will write each day to achieve their final word count. An average goal is to write 1500-5000 words a day. I set myself a goal to write 5500 words a day. Since most of my completed novels finish at roughly 55,000-60,000 words, after months of editing I get to about 80,000 words.

5. Rest your eyes
Once you have completed your manuscript and thrown confetti in celebration. Close the document and do not open it for one month or two. After enough time has passed, open the document and edit. You will see the manuscript with fresh eyes, and you will be amazed at how much needs to be corrected. You may be grossed out looking at it, but I promise, take one month and fight to prevent yourself from opening the document. After a month, open the document and edit it away. The time spent away from your manuscript will also give you some different ideas as to what to throw into the story. A literary agent once said "Sometimes you have to force yourself to close that document and not look at it for a while."


With NaNoWriMo coming up I hope some of these advice and tips will help you. I use this advice and it helped me write my first novel last year complete at 55,000 words by writing each day 5,000 words. NaNoWriMo is the perfect way for a new author to get their foot into the writing door! Hopefully some of these tips work for you!
