Catching Fire

To celebrate being finished with finals I went to go see Catching Fire. I normally end to avoid seeing movies on opening weekend.

I am really happy that the filmmakers kept the movie as close to the book as possible. I hate it when they make so many changes that the film shows no relation to the book whatsoever. I was hoping to see the scene where Katniss and Peeta are watching the previous tributes of the games and watch Haymitch become a victor. Maybe when the DVD is released it'll be one of the deleted scenes.

Beautiful Creatures Movie

I saw Beautiful Creatures and OMG, I think the movie is better than the book. Here's what I liked about the movie, unlike the book which was such a drag just getting through the pages and the poor characterization of the main character that we are inside their head a majority of the time, the movie gets right to the point of the story, and doesn't lag. I literally fell asleep reading the first book in the series which read like a carbon copy of Twilight. The actual novel series just really lacked characterization. I look forward to when Beautiful Creatures is going to be released on DVD.

Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks

Love hurts. There is nothing as painful as heartbreak. But in order to learn to love again, you must learn to trust again.
When a mysterious young woman named Katie appears in the small North Carolina town of Southport, her sudden arrival raises questions about her past. Beautiful yet self-effacing, Katie seems determined to avoid forming personal ties until a series of events draws her into two reluctant relationships: one with Alex, a widowed store owner with a kind heart and two young children; and another with her plainspoken single neighbor, Jo. Despite her reservations, Katie slowly begins to let down her guard, putting down roots in the close-knit community and becoming increasingly attached to Alex and his family.
But even as Katie begins to fall in love, she struggles with the dark secret that still haunts and terrifies her . . . a past that set her on a fearful, shattering journey across the country, to the sheltered oasis of Southport. With Jo’s empathic and stubborn support, Katie eventually realizes that she must choose between a life of transient safety and one of riskier rewards . . . and that in

the darkest hour, love is the only true safe haven.

I have never read any of Nicholas Sparks books, I only read one of his books Message in a Bottle, and I found that book to be unappealing. I recently picked up the book to read because I am very picky. I refuse to watch a movie based on a book without reading the book first. I found this book to be quite enjoyable. The book really falls under the romance-thriller suspense. There are parts filled with so much romance and suspense the reader can find their hearts racing between the chemistry of Katie and Alex. Sparks has really good writing, and for a male writer, his romance novel fulfilled my expectations. I am very excited to be seeing the film and to compare what was kept and removed from the film.

The Hunger Games

One of my favorite books is now a movie. I loved how they kept it close to the original source. In the post apocalyptic ruins of what used to be America, the districts are divided into 12 factions. Because the factions were always at odds with one another the government made The Hunger Games a televised event in which each district will send in one girl and one boy from the ages of 12-17 to compete in a fight to the death tournament.

I liked the book, once you get past the first fifty pages and get into the part where Katniss is in the games the story gets really good. I highly recommend people see it.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2

I must not cry while writing this post. This is going to be a very sad post for me. Harry Potter is one of the best book series I have ever read. I am so sad, not just for for the books, believe me I was sad when I hit the last page in the epilogue, but now the movies are over. The wonderful books and movies that turned me into the avid reader  that I am today are now over. I wish Rowling would continue the series with the kids going to Hogwarts.  What I like is how Harry after growing up with so many troubles in his youth got his happy ending.

Black Swan Stunt Double Speaks Out

So Sara Lane a soloist with the American Ballet Theater spoke out about how Natalie Portman didn't really do much of the dancing in her film The Black Swan. Anyone could tell Natalie didn't really do most of the dancing. Half the times you couldn't see her face in the film. Looking at the time she was cast for the film, and when the movie was released.

There is absolutely NO FREAKING WAY she could have been a classically trained ballerina in two years, and the fact that Portman took credit for the dancing is astounding. What I find even worse is how the film didn't even give credit to Sara for the dancing in the film. I trained in classical ballet for years, and let me tell you something it takes years of training to develop all of those skills.

The only movie on dancers I ever really liked was Center Stage. The company used real professional ballet dancers from dance companies and didn't have to waste film time training dancers. Natalie Portman is just insulting to everyone who is a dancer pretty much stating you could be a professional ballet dancer in two years.

Black Swan

I went to see the Black Swan in theaters yesterday. Since I used to be a dancer I will always watch movies dealing with theater, music, and ballet. I had seen the trailers and I wanted to see this movie very badly. I actually really liked the premise for it.

A ballet dancer for the New York City Ballet wants to be the best. The company is doing Swan Lake for their fall show, but the catch was there would be two dancer, one for the black swan, and one for the white swan, so the director puts it to where the dancer has to be able to do both roles. Nina works hard to achieve her goal in becoming the Swan Queen and trying to get the role drives her to insanity.

I loved this movie. What I really liked was the film portraying how everything in the performing arts is about competition. In this art your friends are your competition because everyone is vying for the same spot. I didn't like some of Natalie Portman's roles as Nina but when it got to the scenes of her going crazy I felt like those really stuck it to her. The only thing I didn't like was her taking credit for becoming a dancer in two years. There was a stunt double used, and yes it's true you really can't become a professional dancer in two years.

Here's the trailer for the movie.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows Part 1

Part one of the epic finale to an amazing series. I went to see it in the movies, and I was really impressed that the screenwriter kept every essence of the last book close to the page as possible. The action scenes are just phenomenal. These are my lifelong favorite books. When part two comes out next year I'll be even more sad.

The Blind Side

The blind side is about a boy who grew up on the slums, and is taken in by a wealthy family. I thought the movie was touching and beautiful. It shows no matter where you come from you will find a home somewhere. I've liked a lot of Sandra Bullocks movies most in particular Miss Congeniality, The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, and Practical Magic so i just had to see this new movie with her. She looked good as a blond, but I'm so used to seeing her as a brunette. This was a truly beautiful movie I recommend seeing.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince

Guys you know what a big freak of Harry Potter I am. I go psychotic whenever I see the trailers for Harry Potter. I just saw the movie, and it totally lived up to my expectations. They kept the movie as close to the book as possible. I loved the movie! See the trailer!

Next on the Reading List
